Strengthening the role of women and young political leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Posted Aug 12, 2016

USAID and the Council / Council of Europe implemented a 21-month program "Strengthening the role of women and young political leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina". The program started in September 2011 and will run until June 2013. Program activities are carried out in two directions in order to better support the greater involvement of women and youth in the political process in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Activities are aimed at achieving the following objectives:

1) Greater involvement of women in political processes; and

2) Create a new and more responsible generation of leaders within political parties

The overall objective of the program is to empower women and young people in order to take on a more active role in the political process. The program will help create a new and more responsible generation of leaders of political parties in the upcoming municipal / municipal elections and to raise awareness about the importance of the role of women in political processes, as well as to increase their involvement in politics.

Description of problem

Although women in BiH achieved political power at the highest levels, they are still significantly under-represented in public life and in leadership positions in political parties as well as the national and regional levels. The root of the problem lies in the strong cultural and social prejudices that are still present. Political and party leaders viewed women as irrelevant to achieve their aspirations in achieving and maintaining political power. Taking all this into account, this program is a significant focus on raising awareness of the importance of the role of women in the political process before municipal / municipal elections in 2012, and to working with women, NGOs with female sign and women kanditatkinjama the elections.

Program activities and expected results

Program activities will strengthen communication and political awareness among women and young people of different nationalities. Elections 2012 provide an opportunity to strengthen women and young people to have a greater role in the electoral and political processes, because then the political parties more focused on the core issues of governance at the municipal / municipal level than the ethnic divisions that dominate the national political debates.

Council / Council of Europe will implement a series of activities aimed at achieving the following results:

Result 1. Increase the participation of women in political processes

A large number of NGOs from urban and rural areas, especially those aimed at improving the position of women in BiH will enhance their knowledge of legislation relating to gender equality and the current status regarding implementation of the law. NGOs will enhance dialogue and cooperation with government institutions and women candidates in municipal / municipal elections in 2012, and to promote and lobby for better representation of women in the political life of the country.

The project will focus on the following activities in order to achieve the above results:

  • Maintenance of public debate throughout the country.

  • Organization of seminars on women's participation in public and political life, which will be held with young politicians, students of the School of Political Studies in BiH, who leads the Council / Council of Europe.

Result 2. Create a new and more responsible generation of leaders within political parties

School of Political Studies of the Council / Council of Europe in BiH provides political education for young political cadres since 2003. School empowers young BiH politicians for the purpose of acquiring knowledge in the field relevant to the further development of the country towards EU integration, as well as to take a more active role in the Association of the State Council / Council of Europe. The purpose of the seminar is to help young political leaders to improve their understanding of the policy of working together and to develop common positions on important issues, regardless of their party and national commitment.
